Understand and use your volunteers better.

Sadly, I often shake my head when I see Chambers under-utilizing the pool of volunteer-minded people in their community. It makes no sense to me.

Volunteers don't hurt the budget and can significantly reduce the stress associated with, in many cases today, an under-funded and under-resourced Chamber staff. In addition, if encouraged, they can be wonderful assets on the membership development side of things.

Right out of the blocks, you have an advantage ... your name. There is prestige -- aka "psychic income" -- attached to being able to tell friends and associates that they volunteer for THE Chamber of Commerce assuming, of course, that you have a decent reputation in town. Understanding this is the first step in building a dynamic and passionate volunteer organization.

The second step is to find the best person to take charge of this group. Ideally, this person should be a Chamber member but it's not that crucial. Leadership, drive and imagination are the qualities you're looking for. Whomever you choose should be invited to attend board meetings so they learn and understand the workings and mission of the Chamber.

The last step is to try new things. Use your imagination. Look at what other Chambers are doing with their volunteers and use some of their successful ideas to revitalize your Chamber's presence in your community.

One more thing: Treat your volunteers with respect and kindness. You can never say "Thank you" too many times. Figure out little perks that they will get. Build a happy "family" culture with them.

Remember, if you do it right, you'll relieve the burdens on your staff and things will run more smoothly, more passionately, and more profitably. That's what you call success.

As always, we'd be happy to share some fresh ideas with you. Please get in touch at (805) 201-2881.
