50% Membership Loss ... that's a Serious Loss of Revenue!

The experts say that most Chambers of Commerce will, on average, lose half of their first- and second-year members!   That, you have to admit, is pretty astounding.   Imagine a for-profit business selling products and services that generated such a low level of customer satisfaction.   Would you invest your own money in that company?   Probably not.   However, if its management took immediate steps to radically improve that performance, you might view them with added respect and confidence.   As always, the true measure of an organization is how it performs when things are not working well versus when things are going smoothly.

So, let's consider what to do about this situation.   After all, that's real money!   A simple conclusion is that [a] something is lacking in the membership value proposition and [b] member expectations (valid or not) are not being met.   Both aspects should be addressed and dynamic solutions should be implemented.   However, that tends to involve endless meeetings and your membership boat has a very serious leak.   You must act NOW!

Here's a simple approach that will help you achieve positive results very quickly.
    1. Pretend ...
            [a] that new members get a 3-month free trial and
            [b] that your job is on the line if they don't sign up. (i.e. Get serious!)
    2. What are you going to do during that 3-month period to make sure they sign up and you keep your job?

During this "trial" period, sincerely learn to understand value and expectations from the member's perspective, and engage with new members in ways that will ensure their satisfaction and your future.   Look, listen and learn.   If successful, repeat the same engagement formula every three months   It's good business practice and it's profitable.

If you were not successful, then you know you need to fix the value/expectations situation.   I can't think of too many businesses thriving on the same business approach they were using 20-30 years ago so ... add value and exceed expectations.   It's a great strategy.

Remember . . . "Showcase" your members . . . they'll "Showcase" YOU!
