Helping people WANT to join your Chamber

More and more Chamber professionals are admitting that businesses no longer HAVE TO join their local Chamber if they wish to succeed locally.   The good old days of the Chamber being the only place to network and build long-lasting business relations are history.   Today's technology and ubiquitous networking options trump the old ways of doing business.

As I pointed out recently, there aren't many thriving organizations still doing business the same way they were 20 years ago.   We need to take that reality seriously and ask anew -- if there is no longer a need to join the Chamber -- why should someone become a member?   What's in it for them?

Any sales professional or psychologist will remind you that people buy what they want much more often than what they need.   So, the question becomes ... How do we make people want to join our Chamber AND then renew their membership each year?

There are two things to look at. One is short term and the other takes much longer.

The first is to examine how you can add value to your membership proposition.   In other words, what new benefits can you add that [a] will meet the growing business expectations of potential new members and [b] cost you next to nothing?

The second item on the agenda is to focus on branding and visibility ... re-branding your Chamber as the facilitating, go-to source for information, resources, and technology that drives growth in a robust business environment as well as the health and welfare of the community as a whole.

It's all about reestablishing your leadership position in the community so think of simple ways you can become more visible by bringing people together to stimulate creative ideas and solutions that benefit the area as a whole.   You don't need to have all the answers but if you are visibly trying to help others do so, then you will have accomplished a great deal.

Whenever you generate a positive, energized reputation, you will attract people and organizations because they will want to be a part of something that is successful.   It's very infectious and will yield great outcomes.   It's a very important strategy.

Remember . . . "Showcase" your members . . . they'll "Showcase" YOU!
