From Scotland ... a few thoughts

Times change and things don't work quite as well as they used to ... no matter what country you are in.  Sadly, there's no getting away from the aging process -- both individually and organizationally -- even though I see so many Chambers of Commerce choosing the comfort and convenience of denial and pretending that "things aren't that serious" ... yet!  In other words, let's kick this ugly little can (e.g. membership retention) down the road for others to handle later.

Interestingly, we would be appalled if we observed one of our business members ignoring their own business challenges.  We would, of course, predict their eventual demise.  In that case, why should it be different for a Chamber?  It isn't.  The only difference is that a business can move faster (theoretically) than a lumbering nonprofit Board of Directors.

So ... how do you rate your Chamber in this context?  Is it a 21st-century growth machine or is it doing the same old, same old thing?  If your answer is less than positive, then it's definitely time to re-vitalize the makeup of your board.  After all, that's where the final responsibility lies.

It's no longer appropriate to pass the buck and dump all the responsibility on the CEO.  That's just not fair and it definitely doesn't work in the long term.  Boards and CEOs must always be in lockstep.
