"Mixers ... they're so 20th-century!"

I dislike the word "mixer".   I laughed out loud a few months ago when someone exclaimed "Mixers ... they're so 20th-century!"   I tend to agree.   And adding the word "networking" on the front doesn't improve a thing.   It doesn't sound professional and seldom attracts new attendees.

For further proof, go back over the last few months and see how many new members have attended.   And then see how many actually came to another. Right there, that tells a story that can be quite discomforting especially when one of your membership benefits is the great networking mixers you put on each month!

Yes, it does make a difference how big your membership is.   The larger the Chamber ... the larger the attendance ... and the greater the possibility of running into people you haven't met before and developing new business opportunities.   And, if your Chamber is smaller, you may be happy because you charge admission which helps your budget.   Whatever your situation I suggest it's time to adapt your thinking with the goal of increasing attendance.

Most decision-makers are too busy to go to mixers.   However, if you give them an interesting reason to attend a relaxing little "soiree" at the end of the day then it becomes a different proposition.

One format I have seen work beautifully is to have a featured speaker at your monthly event.   This isn't some bigwig with a long and boring powerpoint presentation.   It's a simple 5-10 minute presentation, followed by Q&A.

Each month, you invite someone who has some impact on daily life in your community.   For example, in Southern California, if you invite someone from the local water district to talk about how they are dealing with the drought, I guarantee you will have a nice increase in attendance.

As you look at your community you will uncover plenty of areas that generate public interest and it's amazingly simple to get key people to show up and share their world, especially with Q&A, adult beverages, etc.

Give it a try.   You'll like the results.

Remember . . . "You can never do too much for your members!"
