Ditch the Contact Form, Baby!

Have you ever sent an email and received no response?   Of course you have.   Did you wonder whether the other person received it?   Of course you did.   Sadly the courtesy of, at a minimum, a simple acknowledgement is no longer de rigeur. (That's fancy French talk for "no longer required by etiquette".)   We just have to deal with this as best we can.

As you have probably guessed this state of unmannerly affairs really ticks me off.

This all came to a head a couple of months ago when I needed to contact a particular organization and all I could find on their website was a phone number that always went to voice mail and a 'Contact Form' to be filled out.

To date, I have left three voice mails and submitted their form twice.   You guessed it ... no response ... which is rather ironic since I am trying to give them something for free.   As some might say ... sheesh!!

The 'Contact Form' has always struck me as a transparent excuse to make communication more difficult if not to avoid it completely.   So, I decided to do an unscientific study and here are the results.

Since the beginning of November, I have submitted 20 'Contact Forms' to a variety of organizations.   In each form I made it plainly obvious that I wanted to learn more about them with the implication that I might want to help out.   To date, I have received one (1) actual reply and three (3) automated "Thank you for contacting us. Someone will get right back to you." responses and, yes, I am still waiting to hear from whoever "someone" is.

PLEASE ... if your Chamber uses a 'Contact Form' it's time to ditch it and demonstrate that you are accessible and responsive.   There are plenty of ways to disguise the email addresses of your key people so that the spam bots can't read them.

A "21st Century" Chamber understands that more communication means more positive relationships and more relevance for the Chamber in its community.

Remember . . . it's all about Relevance + Retention + Revenue.
