The Pies Have It!

A client Chamber CEO was telling me recently how well they were doing.   He was reporting consistently steady growth numbers and, naturally, I was happy . . . after all, they were doing what I told them to do!   Membership and revenue growth were no longer memories.

Our strategy was pretty simple.
    1. Kick-start membership and revenue growth.
    2. Streamline operations.
It was now time for step number two.

I wanted to discuss how much time and money it was taking to run the various "departments" of the organization -- events, advocacy, administration, membership sales, retention, member services, etc.   It turned out that those answers weren't so easy to come by.

So, we asked the staff to account for their time as best they could across those departments.   Multiplying hours by compensation, we produced a pie chart showing the cost of each department.   In addition, we produced a pie chart showing all revenue sources.

Comparing the two pie charts generated enlightened and lively discussion, especially when the staff was included.   Comments like "I didn't realize ...!" and "Why are we ...?" and "... costs too much." were common.

This isn't a lecture or workshop so I'll stop right there.   You get the idea.

My point is quite simple: numbers may tell us what we need to know but most people find it easier to process and understand information when they see it in pictures.   Pie charts are a simple way to do this.

This was a highly productive exercise for all concerned and has become a great context for them to focus on "How can we do things better?"

I wish you a profitable summer.

Cheers!
